About Us

The Directors of Square Circle HR Ltd have over 50 years combined HR experience in both public and private sectors and have membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. The Directors have specific experience in the provision of employment law advice across all industry sectors.

Alison Welsh

Alison WelshAlison is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Para-legal in Employment Law. With over 18 years HR experience many of these gained operating at a strategic level as an integral part of management teams in organisations across both the private and public sectors.

After leaving the University of Strathclyde with a joint honours degree in Business and Psychology Alison joined Kodak Limited in London as a graduate trainee. While at Kodak she gained the Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management at the University of London. Alison then relocated back to Scotland and worked in the fast moving Electronics sector for AVEX Electronics and then Benchmark Electronics.

In addition to managing generalist HR teams in the UK and in Europe, covering all aspects of HR from recruitment, training and development, pay and progression to restructuring, Alison was involved in mergers and acquisition activity with the integration of different business cultures and operating structures then as the market changed latterly gained considerable experience in downsizing and site closure.

As a Para-legal Alison has developed a ‘specialism’ in employment law which she combines with her generalist HR experience to offer sound, safe, commercial advice to businesses. Alison has also helped companies of different sizes and backgrounds to achieve and retain Investors in People.

Since 2003 Alison has worked as a consultant assisting many different organisations in all areas of Human Resource Management. Her objective is to help businesses operate more effectively by helping them to align their people needs and their operational needs in everyday business practice.

Christian Potter

Christian PotterChristian is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, with 15 years HR experience in both the private and public sectors.

After leaving the University of St Andrews with an honours degree in Psychology, she joined the Clydesdale Bank’s Management Training Programme before turning to a career in HR. She undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management at the University of Strathclyde and on completion of this, joined the BT Personnel Graduate Programme, working for BT for 6 years in a variety of HR roles.

Christian’s HR roles have included Manpower Planning, Recruitment and Resourcing, Policy Development and generalist HR Manager positions - advising and training Managers on all areas of HR including performance management, discipline, grievance, absence, poor performance and re-structuring. Her work experience has been gained with employers including National Australia Group, Scottish Power and the NHS.

Recent experience with a large Consultancy has focused on the provision of employment law advice and employment documentation to small to medium sized business across the full range of industries. This has resulted in an excellent understanding of the HR issues facing SMEs as they become increasingly aware of tightening employment law in the UK and recognise that good people management practices can result in well managed and motivated employees.

Christian is also a part-time Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University lecturing on HR topics at both Undergraduate and MBA level.

Roz Wood

Roz WoodRoz has over 20 years experience working as a generalist HR professional, including six years as an HR Director reporting to the Chief Executive.

Roz's experience has been principally within retail. She has been responsible for managing the HR aspect of a management buyout, the company flotation on the stock market and new store openings.

She was responsible for HR strategy and was required to devise and implement reward and remuneration strategies, change management programmes, staff reprofiling, performance management, and succession planning.

With her responsibility for a busy HR Department, Roz was also hands-on in dealing with all HR issues including recruitment (up to Director level), disciplinary and grievance matters, redundancy, appraisals and payroll, management and directors bonus schemes.

As a Director, she was involved in the operation of the overall business including Finance, Marketing, Buying, manufacturing and Operations, therefore has a sound business acumen.

When Roz moved to Scotland she joined a large Consultancy providing employment law documentation and advice to a large number of clients across numerous industry sectors. This enabled her to fully understand the challenges and demands place on SME's and take into account business requirements when providing solutions to employee problems.

Roz has also written and delivered numerous training courses covering all HR issues, management skills, and customer services.

John McAlpine

John McAlpineJohn is a Non-Executive Director with Square Circle HR Ltd. He brings a wealth of Management and Operational experience and is actively involved in the strategic management of the business.

Early in his career he worked with William Collins Sons & Company Limited as an Assistant Management Accountant and then moved into General Management in 1981. He held several key positions with them including Commercial Director, Managing Director and Chief Executive UK Operations. John was a key member of the Collins Senior Management Team appointed to implement a corrective action plan in the New York based Harper & Row Publishing Company which led to the formation of Harper Collins Publishers in 1989.

In 1995, while acting for a Singapore listed company, he was responsible for leading the acquisition of the Collins Stationery and Diary Division. This resulted in him assuming the role of Managing Director of the newly formed Collins Debden Ltd. In 1999 he was appointed Group Executive Director Finance and Operations and spent a considerable time in the Far East. During his career John gained considerable experience in Mergers and Acquisitions.

John has also held several Non-Executive and Voluntary Directorships including Dunbartonshire Enterprise and was Independent Chairman of the Dunbartonshire and Lomond Careers Company for five years.

Currently he is Chairman of Wordie Properties Limited and is a Non-Executive Director of several companies. He is also active in a voluntary role with Business Mentoring Scotland.
